Choosing a garage door opener in Denver (2026)

We install 30–40 openers a month around the Denver metro. Here's the short version of what actually matters in 2026 — drive type, battery backup (now required in Colorado for any new install), Wi-Fi features, and which brand survives our temperature swings.
Drive type
Belt drive
The quiet option. Best for attached garages with a bedroom above. $$$.
Chain drive
Loud but bulletproof. Great for detached garages and heavy doors. $.
Direct drive / wall-mount
Mounts beside the door — frees up ceiling space, very quiet. $$$$.
Battery backup is required
Colorado adopted SB-19-108 a few years ago, requiring battery backup on new opener installs. This is the same law California passed after wildfire evacuations. Practically: every new opener we install includes a backup battery, and we replace the battery every 2–3 years during a tune-up.
Wi-Fi: actually useful
MyQ (LiftMaster/Chamberlain) and Aladdin Connect (Genie) both work well. The killer feature isn't opening from your phone — it's the alert when you left the door open and drove to DIA. Worth the small upcharge.
